Sims 2 Personal Gameplay Tips

Are you a beginner on the Sims 2? Whether or not you are, here are some useful tips for playing the game.

General Gameplay Tips

  1. Pause and Plan: Use the pause button frequently to plan your Sims' actions, especially in large households or busy/messy situations.
  2. Use Aspirations Wisely: Focus on fulfilling your Sims' wants to keep their aspiration meter high and earn rewards. Use these rewards to your advantage
  3. Utilize Needs Bars: Regularly check and balance your Sims' needs to keep them happy and productive. Be logical with them. Whilst sims cannot multitask in Sims 2, have a flow with the needs, toilet, then shower, get leftovers, then to bed. Base it on the layout of your house too!

Building and Decorating

  1. Blueprints First: Plan your house layout before you start building to save time and resources. Building in the Sims 2 an be clunky so plan first.
  2. Use Cheats for Creativity: Enable cheats like "moveObjects on" for more flexible building and decorating options. I keep many cheats set as on with a Userstartup system.
  3. Functional Design: Ensure that bathrooms, kitchens, and living areas are easily accessible to all Sims. Don't do what some premade houses do and have 3 doors into a tiny 6 tiles bathroom...

Social and Relationships

  1. Socialize Smartly: Use group interactions to boost multiple relationships at once. These do exist to an extent and use them, from kickybag, to 3-way phonecalls.
  2. Match Interests: Pay attention to Sims' interests to find compatible friends and partners. Not overly important for matches unless you play that way. But their hobby will raise their fun faster than other things might.
  3. Gift Giving: Use gifts to quickly improve relationships (Apologizing works well if you fell out with someone).

Career and Skills

  1. Multitask Skills: Combine skill-building with other activities, like reading a skill book, Swimming, Painting. These may raise fun, hobby enthusiasm and make some sell able items depending on what you choose to do.
  2. Choose the Right Job: Select careers that align with your Sims' aspirations and skills, they will be promoted faster which means more money!
  3. Networking: Make friends with co-workers to boost your career progression. Networking can get you a raise, promotion or even a freebie.

Financial Management

  1. Start Small: Begin with a modest house and expand as your Sims earn more money. If you have Monique's Hacked Computer Mod, you can invest to earn some money.
  2. Invest in Skills: Spend money on skill-building objects early on to improve your Sims' job performance and income.
  3. Gardening and Crafting: Use gardening and crafting stations to grow food and create items for additional income.

Family and Generations

  1. Teach Toddlers Early: Use the toddler stage to teach essential skills like walking, talking, and potty training. This will not only give them a huge aspiration boost, but also making care for them a little easier.
  2. Encourage Homework: Help children with their homework to ensure good grades and future success. I use a mod that makes them drop everything to do homework at 7pm every night.
  3. Legacy Planning: Focus on a main heir for smooth generational transitions and keep family relationships strong. You don't always have to think "Right which of the kids is the heir", I usually think which family will continue this family name.

Managing Time

  1. Schedule Routines: Establish daily routines to manage time effectively, such as set meal times and designated study/skill hours., making sure everyone can use the bathroom and sleep is key to surviving Sims 2.
  2. Vacation Benefits: Use vacations to give your Sims a break and boost their moods and relationships. I actually tend to use these more as a way of gaining lots of aspiration.
  3. Night Owl/Early Bird Advantage: Utilize the night hours for quiet skill-building activities. Especially when the kids are in bed and you don't need to sleep just yet, or be an early bird and spend the early hours doing some hobbies.

Cheats and Shortcuts

  1. Money Cheats: Use "motherlode" or "kaching" for quick cash infusions if needed.
  2. Motivation Cheats: Use "maxmotives" to fill all needs bars instantly in tough situations. I actually use the Simblender for this.
  3. Use Mods: Use Mods to improve your gameplay, fix some bugs and also make the game easier and more manageable to play. In my eyes this is more fun too!

Miscellaneous

  1. Memory Management: Regularly review and clear unnecessary memories to improve game performance. I hate that the sims will get a memory every time they make a BFF or stomp some vermin.
  2. Pets and Servos: Consider adding pets or servos to your household for added fun and utility. Other quirks such as occults are available too.
  3. Weather and Seasons: Use the Seasons expansion to add depth to your gameplay with seasonal activities and gardening. Other Expansions and fun are available too!
In all honestly the best tip I could give would be just to play and find out, dong things wrong is the best way to learn and that makes the Sims 2 so much fun!
